Jessie’s nervousness increased, heightening with the passing of each minute and reaching its apex as she walked onstage just after nine. She had sought Zoey out beforehand, thinking it would settle her nerves to get their initial meeting out of the way, but it was to no avail. Though they’d played Double Door a few times in the past, the crowd seemed enormous as she gazed out from behind her drums. But once she picked up her sticks and began to play, a calm washed over her. Her body moved with fluid precision that filled her with elation. Normally focused and expressionless as she played, she couldn’t contain the joyful grin that spread across her face, and she even laughed when she removed her shirt between songs and heard a whistle followed by an enthusiastic female voice shouting her name.

The band, as a whole, played flawlessly, a fact emphasized by the cheers reverberating through the building. The crowd, though often standoffish at Double Door, even edged near the stage, dancing a little and sometimes singing along. Before they started “Crushed,” the song Neal had written for Zoey and insisted on playing, he actually dedicated the song to her. Despite the small chorus of screaming females who responded, Jessie groaned inwardly. Otherwise they completed their set seamlessly. It might have been their best show.

While they broke down their equipment, Jessie noticed a small, skinny man with thinning hair in a ponytail and a loud silk shirt approach the area to the side of the stage where they stashed their instruments. In his left hand he held a mixed drink, in his right, a fat, thankfully unlit, cigar.

“Neal?” he questioned in a gruff baritone, shifting his cigar to his mouth and holding out his hand.

Neal spun in the direction of the voice. “Dino?”

“Nice to meet you.” He pumped Neal’s hand twice then grabbed his cigar from between his lips.

“You too.” Neal stretched himself to his full height, towering over Dino. “What’d you think?”

Artless, Jessie thought, shaking her head a little. Seeing that Amazing Technicolor, the next band on the bill, was itching to set up, Jessie dashed back onstage to finish clearing her equipment from the stage, missing Dino’s response. As she labored over her cymbals and, now, all of Neal’s stuff, she watched the two men talking. Neal smiled and nodded vigorously several times, and as both men laughed, Jessie wished she knew how to read lips. Dino finally handed Neal a business card, shook his hand again and walked away. Jessie thought she heard him say, “See you next week,” as he passed by. She leapt off the stage and grabbed Neal.

“Well?”

Neal’s smile split his face in two as he said, “We’re supposed to go to the studio on Thursday.”

Jessie screamed in her excitement, a high, ear-splitting shriek that drew stares from those around her. She didn’t care. This was the first time any label had shown any interest in any band she’d ever been a part of, and she wasn’t about to let decorum or social poise stand in the way of celebrating her dream.
